Information for patients
What is a hand occupational therapist?
A Hand Therapist is a highly skilled professional specialising in assessing and treating conditions of the hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder. Hand Therapists are typically either Hand Physios (Physiotherapists) or Occupational Therapists who have advanced training and experience in managing upper limb injuries and disorders. They play a vital role in helping individuals regain strength, mobility, and function, whether recovering from surgery, injury, or managing chronic conditions.
What is an accredited hand therapist?
An accredited Hand Therapist, awarded by the Australian Hand Therapy Association (AHTA) is a distinguished professional who has achieved the highest level of recognition in hand therapy.
This designation is available to both Hand Physiotherapists and Hand Occupational Therapists who meet the stringent criteria set by the AHTA.
To earn this accreditation, therapists must demonstrate advanced expertise, extensive clinical experience, and a commitment to ongoing professional development. The process includes achieving postgraduate qualifications, completing supervised practice, and passing the AHTA’s rigorous credentialing process.

Choosing an Accredited Hand Therapist ensures you receive care from a practitioner with exceptional skills and knowledge in managing complex upper limb conditions. Whether you are treated by a Hand Physio or a Hand Occupational Therapist, an AHT provides the highest standard of care to help you achieve your recovery goals.
